Most full Shopify website builds with me are $3,200. Your final quote depends on the pages, catalog, design work, and integrations your business needs. The website build is one part of your budget; your Shopify subscription, theme license, apps, and any additional work should be identified separately in your proposal.
I’m Rachel Midori, a Shopify web designer based in Carlsbad, San Diego County, and the founder of MIDORI Bikinis. I work with small businesses across California and the US. Here’s how I suggest comparing website quotes before you commit.
Start with what the site needs to do
A small retail store with a focused catalog needs a different setup from a subscription business or a service business with booking tools. Start by listing what customers need to accomplish: find a product, choose the right option, understand delivery, book a service, or send an inquiry.
Then agree on the pages and features that support those tasks. This makes it easier to compare proposals and keeps the design process focused on your business.
What changes the cost of a Shopify build?
- Pages and catalog: the number of unique layouts, products, collections, and options to organize.
- Content: whether copy and photography are ready or need to be created and edited.
- Theme work: how much can be handled with existing sections and what needs custom development.
- Integrations: subscriptions, booking, wholesale, email marketing, and other systems.
- Migration: content transfer, catalog cleanup, and redirects from old URLs.
What should a proposal explain?
A useful proposal names the deliverables, responsibilities, revision process, timeline, and costs. It should also tell you who owns the store and how you’ll update it after launch. Ask which content you need to supply, which pages receive custom attention, and what testing happens before the site goes live.
Compare the scope as carefully as the price. Two quotes can look similar while including very different amounts of content, development, and launch support.
What should you budget beyond the design fee?
Budget for the Shopify plan, domain, any paid theme, and apps selected for your store. These costs vary, so confirm current pricing before choosing them. Photography, extensive copywriting, data cleanup, and ongoing maintenance may also need a separate scope. Keep the app list purposeful: each tool should support a real requirement.
Can I start with a smaller project?
Sometimes the right next step is a focused improvement rather than a complete rebuild. Navigation, confusing product information, or a difficult mobile layout may be the first things to address. Share your existing site so we can work out whether a targeted update or a full redesign makes sense.
Do I need a designer in my city?
You can work remotely with a designer. A local designer may bring useful context for your market, but relevant work, clear communication, and a well-defined scope matter wherever you’re based. I work with clients in San Diego, across California, and throughout the US.
